We hold our Monthly Teen Groups once a month on a Sunday as a social space to connect with autistic peers. At Appeer we welcome individuals who identify as girls and women and/or those assigned female at birth who many be gender questioning and/or non binary. A few months ago Paula and Kris hosted a really useful training session for staff all about LGTBQIA+ and how we can better support our participants in sessions and beyond. Nicki hosted another fun Minecraft Session online with the Teens the other evening. Some of our girls find coming to our in-person Groups overwhelming but are still able to connect with us and their peers online. At last Sunday's Girls Group the girls were able to enjoy the sunshine outside. C and S made a bubble mixture - it didn't really work at first, but, they adapted and used a straw to blow bubbles into the bowl which made lots of bubbles to play with! At our AP we don't just stay at the setting. Most weeks we go out for a walk to the shops or the recreation ground but once a term we also go on a community visit to help with the girls' confidence in other settings. Many of our participants have been at home for a long time and being out in public feels really overwhelming. We support them to come out and about as much as we can. This week at our Weekday Young Women’s Group the brief was to create some physical context for the mini figures which were already provided. Whilst F was creating hers a small group of us including her were having a conversation around neurodivergence, the similarities between ADHD and autism in women, self identification as well as formal diagnosis and more recent theories regarding neurodiversity e.g monotropism that are emerging. Yesterday we celebrated 5 amazing years with an Anniversary Afternoon Tea to thank all our incredible donors, supporters, and community partners as a way to express our heartfelt thanks to those who have been instrumental in Appeer's journey so far. We were honoured that the Mayor of Woking, Cllr Louise Morales could attend, cut our birthday cake and close the party with such an inspiring speech.
